Rosemary is an evergreen perennial which is incredibly diverse in its uses. Its needle-like leaves and beautiful fragrance is a great addition to any garden. This herb can be used for cooking and does very well when shaped into a beautiful hedge.
Rosemary is very easily maintained. They require 6-8 hours of sunlight in a day with well-draining soil. They prefer a thorough watering (only water when the soil is dry). They do not like to be constantly wet. They do struggle in extreme cold (below 0 degrees), but they manage fine in the Johannesburg winters.
Rosemary flowers from spring through the summer months with a beautiful blue flower. They should be cut back regularly to encourage more flowers. If they are in a hedge they should also be cut back regularly to keep neat.
If they are planted in a vegetable garden good companions are cabbage, beans, carrots and sage.
